When we first moved to San Pedro, it really was “starting all over again”. Although we had been here many times to vacation and dive, when it came to the practical aspects of life on the island, we didn’t have a clue. What’s the best supermarket? Is it safe to buy fruits and veggies from road-side stands? How do you find a dentist? Mechanic? Electrician? Babysitter? After twenty-some years running our own general contracting and design-build firm in Massachusetts, problem solving of this kind is what we know best. Over our first year, we learned the ropes, met people, and began to compile a list of services and sources to expedite the needs of day-to-day living in a strange, exciting place. |
And we made a list of what we can do, what our own strengths are, based on a couple of lifetimes of construction and office management / bookkeeping.Slowly, people we met, people who had homes and life-needs here in San Pedro, but who lived most of their lives elsewhere, began to ask us for advice – time – help. And we gave it. Most of the people we met, we quickly realized, didn’t want to spend their precious vacation time having a golf cart fixed, doing laundry and grocery shopping, or delving through piles of brochures to find the best dive boat, day tour or restaurant. They did not want to arrive to a musty, closed-up space that hadn’t felt a breath of fresh air since they had closed the windows, months earlier, or spend their last hours cleaning and doing laundry And, we decided, they didn’t have to. |
